Vintage Sea Theme: Pinteresting

I wanted to have a “vintage sea theme” going on, which is a weird as shit theme, and sounds very pinteresting if you know what I mean.

What’s up everyone?! How many times do you think I can apologize about being super busy? Well, here’s another one! Sorry guys! I’m super busy– and even though I want to be instafamous, I have to go to my job and make money that way. Such is life, right?

Anyway, I’m writing to you guys today to talk about my cute AF decoration in my bathroom! I’ve been having a hard time trying to decorate my house, so I picked literally the smallest room and decided that if I can accomplish that room, I’m winning. Well kids, I “finished” the room! And if by finished we mean the walls need a second coat of paint, and I should probably get a new vanity– eeeehh, it’s basically finished.

I’m a super big commitment-phobe (but not about important things) I’m afraid to commit to wall colors, themes in rooms, and furniture. This is why I haven’t finished any of the other rooms in our house. I made a bold-ass choice in my living room, and I love it– but now, I actually have to get cracking on the furniture part. BUT, that’s another post for another day.

On to the bathroom:

I wanted to have a “vintage sea theme” going on, which is a weird as shit theme, and sounds very pinteresting if you know what I mean. I figured that I could get some boats, anchors, and be super basic about it– but then I hit my head on my hanging chandelier in my kitchen and I got a super crazy idea! #mermaidsMF YES, that’s right. I mermaid that bathroom into a pretty decent place to wash your hands. #imjustbeinghonest

I picked out a very teal, jewel toned paint color for the wall and had my husband paint the walls, and maybe part of the ceiling too. Mostly, because we don’t know how to paint a room. Yes, I still had painter’s tape on the wall a year after we painted, because who knew that it actually makes it HARDER to take off after that long? #notme

I picked out brass-ish accessories for the soap dispenser and towel holder…because we all know that actual bathroom fixtures are expensive AF, and I have to eat everyday.

A year after we painted, I figured that we should do something with the thoughts in my head, and on the snowiest day thus far of 2017, we trekked out to World Market, and bought some cool looking shelves. We then got home, tried to put them together and realized that the shelves indeed do NOT come with brackets, and those are sold separately. Clever. So, three trips later (don’t ask about the stupidity of the third trip), and our shelves were installed!

I had been gathering trinkets and pictures like a hoarder for the past 6 months.  I figured I would pick out items that I would want to use and that would look thematic in our sea bathroom. So, as soon as those babies went up, you bet I was right there to shove my husband out of the way so I FINALLY had a place to put our weird mermaid statue.

When putting items on a shelf– it’s very important not to laugh at yourself for how ridiculous that sounds– there are some visual tips that I like to live by:

  1. Odd numbers are best. Yes, I have an even count on both of my shelves.. Do what I say, not as I do.
  2. Think outside the box when looking for prints. There’s no such store as the “vintage sea themed bathroom store” that has any kind of print/painting/statue that could fit that theme. Girl, you have to search for that…and be on your A-game when you’re in Home Goods. Three of my pictures are gift bags that I cut up and put into a frame.
  3. I tend to keep the same metal, with various colors of wood. I took the inspiration from one print I found at the Paper Source, and surrounded my whole shelf color story around it.
  4. Book ends are a great way to let your audience know that everything in between the book ends are related. Lol, you won’t have an audience in your bathroom.
  5. You can play your color story into various parts of the room, such as the mirror color, your light fixture, or even your door knob. It makes the room look more complete.

Items: Top Shelf: Mermaid Statue- Kirklands; Anchor bookend- Home goods; Crown-wearing Octopus- World Market; Mermaid holding anchor- World Market; Frames- World Market and Home Goods

Bottom Shelf: Whale Painting- Home Goods; Anchor bookend- Home goods; Mermaid greeting card- Home goods; Mermaid print- Paper Source; Frames- Home Goods, TJ Maxx

Here’s the bottom line, if you want your house to be pinterest-worthy, you better worry about it way too much, and let it consume your life.

New Year New Me? Relax.

These “new year, new me” people. MY GOD. Is it just me or are people extra aggressive with their wishes this year?

Alright alright, so I spent too much at Christmas and I’m totally ready for my overly expensive trip to Jamaica (so my saving mantra is a bust)– but we have something to talk about:

These “new year, new me” people. MY GOD. Is it just me or are people extra aggressive with their wishes this year? First off, the line to sign up at Planet Fitness is out into the parking lot and the line at Whole Foods is even longer. Half these people haven’t eaten kale, but they read it’s a staple piece for starving yourself.

“I’m going to change careers”

“I’m going to stop being mean to my husband”

“I’m going to own a dragon”

…where do the delusions end?! Anyway, I have a couple of theories on new year new me, and since you’re already here, maybe you should stick around to read them.

First off, if you’re reading this, you are probably wondering if you are a “new year, new me” person that I’m bitching about. Guess what? You probably are, so stop it and set a goal when you are actually going to do it…like in July when you realize that your cookie pouch of a stomach is indeed not cute in your bathing suit. That’s a new year new me moment that will stick with you.

As for the other 4 people reading, you’re probably in the same boat as me– every day you say you’re going to eat different or less, work out more, stop gossiping…and then something always happens, and cookies are suddenly in your mouth while your dog silently stares at you judging your every move.

My thoughts? Stop trying to think that January 1st is magical. Yes; I get it, the first of a month can inspire change in some…some psychos. For all you normal people out there, stop pressuring yourself to make a change immediately. Change takes planning, change takes time, and sugar takes 3 days to get out of your system completely.

I applaud those who have stuck to their goals thus far, it has been 9 days and you are goin’ strong. I’m not going to encourage you, but you only have about 12 more days until it becomes a habit…and you’re on your way, so don’t screw up 🙂

xoxo

An Open Letter to a Mentor

It started as a job. That’s it. I interviewed, and you offered me the job on the spot. Later on, you told me that I wasn’t a good interview, but I was a looker, and that’s what you needed to fill the job.

Little did you know how much you changed me, made me the person who I am today, and showed me how sure I really am about my career path. I’m sure that I am not the only one who feels this way, but I’m here to tell you thank you. Thank you for letting me put all my emotions on the table, thank you for letting me be your friend…while you became my first mentor in my career. A career that I didn’t even know was worth pursuing, until you opened the door, and walked me down the first part of the path.

You showed me that retail is not just a job, but rather a career for the wise, witty, and creative. You taught me how to sell…sell ice to an Eskimo, and make them believe that they really needed it. You did all of that, while showing me that a mentor, and a manager could be a respected friend and confidant. Countless memories go through my head, while I reminisce about how different I was, and still am, to you. Yet, you still cared, and you still let me be me…while shaping and molding me to make smart decisions in my personal and career life. You did all that, in two short years.

I was going through issues; there was no doubt about that. You let me air it out, on the clock, while still teaching me and using my useless Excel and Power point knowledge to your advantage. You encouraged me to finish school, while reaching inside my heart to let me see my full potential. I came as a broken mess, and you helped me pick up the pieces and move upwards from the lowest position in the store to a respected position that utilized my talents and smarts.

My days and moods varied on what kind of customers that I would encounter that day. “Did I want this to be forever? Is this the company to stay with?” All the while, you were there with the answers. The truth is, you saw that I was good…nay, great at what I was doing, and you tapped into that. I was never meant to be a social worker, sociologist, or (for a brief month) a terrorist interviewer. I was meant to make people happy, and although retail seems to be more on the materialistic aspect of careers…you showed me that there is a way to make it into a happy and fulfilling life.

You saw it inside me, and you grabbed it. Not for your own benefit, but rather because you saw the pain behind my eyes while I tried to figure out what I was going to be for the rest of my life. Maybe, you saw you inside of me, or maybe you still don’t realize how much you actually meant to me, but for everything that you did, and for all of the doors you opened for me, all while being a friend…thank you.

A Broke Bitch’s Guide to Gift Giving: Friends Edition

Broken down by category, your gift guide for the less than monetary blessed

We all know that when the calendar flips to December, most people and their saving accounts start shaking in their boots. Why? They haven’t budgeted, and it means that they actually have to use actual money to give actual gifts…instead of IOU’s.

So here it is: Broken down by category, your gift guide for the less than monetary blessed:

For the friend that lives beyond her means: Why not make her feel some sort of special? Let her ball out with a GC to Neiman Marcus Last Call. Better yet, YOU ball out at Neiman and get her a Rebecca Minkoff at a quarter of the price. She’ll be kissing your Bass outlet drivers in ultimate thanks. Not a fan of discounted designers? (Me either) Try a candle that smells expensive so she can feel like she’s in the VIP lounge at the 40/4 club. Wait, is that still a thing?

For the friend that’s clever/kind of hipster: Nothing like a pair of earrings to make her feel like she’s edgy and different. If that doesn’t work, try a slightly inappropriate mug because she seriously doesn’t understand her audience. She’ll make sure to drink out of this when she’s with her sister’s kids and feel no remorse for it.

For the friend that’s into passing out in bathrooms: Ah, my favorite. Even though you can give this one a hangover kit, the gift will be gone within 24 hours. Make it last longer, but make it cheap…because it’s guaranteed to be lost within 48 hours. A flask, bottle of alcohol, or a hotline to a self-help line are all viable options as well.

For the friend that’s Martha Stewart: If she has her own place, try a couple things for her kitchen, a ring plate, or a clever door mat. My favorite go-to gift for a first time home owner (apt owner or whatevs) is a personalized cutting board or some really nice coasters. I think the best gifts are experiences: get her a couple of cooking classes, and make sure to go too…because we all know you can’t cook either.

For the friend that’s a wine-o: This is dramatically different than the friend ending up on the bathroom floor. These girls/guys usually just end up in their bed cuddling with their dogs reminising about their times in college when they DID end up on the bathroom floor. Trust me, it’s a real type of person. Wine-o’s love a good bottle of their favorite white, red, or blush. But, let’s face it…blush is just for when you’re feeling fancy. There’s such a thing as WINE SOAP..so that’s gross, but it’s an option. Wine glasses, accessories, and wine bags to hide wine in are obvious but always a go to.  A better time would be a trip to a winery. Get a couple people together and buy a bottle of vino.

Anywho: The best gifts are outside the box. If you aren’t sure, here’s my secret. STALK their pinterest page, facebook page, and what they already own. Don’t over think it, or you’ll over buy.

The Feel Good Project

After having my first baby 6 and a half weeks ago, I found myself not being able to feel good about the way I looked. It’s the same old story for most new mommas, but after being told numerous times by my husband that I performed a miracle, I realized I was the only one that felt that I wasn’t confident. So, I made up a project…with the help of my on again off again therapist– It’s called the Feel Good Project, and since most of you guys aren’t moms quite yet, it’s still a great way to feel good when you are having an off week.

The Rules:

  1. Make up outfits– Since I work in retail, this is super easy for me, because I have to wear the clothes…but before I went on leave, my outfits were anything but cute. I have to have at least 3 items on, cute/clean shoes, a necklace, and earrings. This was the hardest, because I’ve been fairly preoccupied with you know…taking care of a newborn. But, I must be doing it right because I’ve been feeling fantastic!
  2. Wear makeup and wash your hair– yes. Go through the process of putting on a little something so you (and only you…because everyone around you thinks you’re awesome) feel good. Make sure to take a shower everyday, and WASH your hair…if you have time, style it.

…and that’s it. You are allowed to have a couple bum days, but you have to GET DRESSED no matter what.

Anywho- It’s Black Friday, and I’m obvs at work…PSA to the shoppers out there…be nice to us today 🙂

Love you, mean it.

Skip It, Save it, or Spend It

I love makeup, and lately, I’ve been getting into actually putting it on instead of just buying it to “collect” it. Below, I’ve given my “humble” (lol) opinion on my everyday products, and where I could have saved, and where I have found my forever products.

  1. Benefit’s Porefessional: Although I love this product, this specific item can run you in the high 20’s for price. If you don’t have that kind of money, I would suggest not splurging on this one. There are many other primers that are drug store brand that are just as good. For example: Maybelline Baby Skin. You can get it at target, and it’s around $6 in price.
  2. Bobbi Brown Foundation: Alright, splurge. Her items are high in quality and last all day…and in my line of work, that takes a STRONG foundation. Not only is it great coverage, it also has 35 SPF. I like BB creams, and e.l.f has a great BB cream for $6 as well.
  3. NARS Bronzer: Skip.skip.skip. It’s winter– you don’t live in the tropics (unless you…do. But I don’t soooo) My advice for the bronzer step– get a professional to match you. Similar to foundation/concealer, you may think you match, but then you see a picture of yourself, and you have to rethink your life.
  4. YSL Double End Eye Pencil: Sorry to say, this is about $30, and it’s so worth it. I hav ebeen on a mission for a pencil that’s better and cheaper, and I can’t find it. In my opinion, if you had to choose one: Pick this one.
  5. Urban Decay’s Mascara: Perversion: I was a huge fan of Scandal Queen’s Fairy Drops, but after the makeup stores near me stopped carrying it, I branched out. I got a sample, and I guess it can do for now. It’s not my end all, but it’s not terrible. My drug store dupe would have to be Rimmel London Volume Flash.
  6. NARS Matte Lip Pencil: How do I get my lips so…lippy? I use lip pencil all over my lips. Sometimes, I don’t even go to a lip stick. The NARS pencils stay on for a long time, and I only have to reapply once or twice during the day. My favorite colors are Train Bleu and Cruella.
  7. YSLRouge Volupte: One of my all time favorite brands, but not the best. I love dark colors for my lips, and this brand gives you a lot of reds. Since I’ve been branching out, I’ve been going to Smashbox, NARS, and Kat Von D to get darks purples and greys.
  8. Urban Decay Makeup Setting Spray: Skip it, people. Hair spray does a great job too…just hold your breath while you’re spraying.

Things I’m Loving: Fall 2016

I realize that my blog name is just the opposite of what I do on a daily basis– which is shop for unnecessary clothes and home decor…but, whatever sue me. Anyway, here are the things I’m loving lately:

Emily Ley’s Simplified Planner: Not only is this planner organized by month and day, you have the option to use the timed organization on each weekday page. The hours go from 6am- 9pm, so you’ll be pretty much covered, except for the rager you’re going to at 9:30…sorry about that. Anyway, I have the mini gold pineapples on my cover, but there are such great options if golden fruit isn’t for you. Sign up for their emails, you’ll get some great coups.

Kirklands: If you aren’t #blessed enough to have a store near you, go online and say buhbye to your money. No, just kidding..be smart and download their app. It’s a more organized home goods, and if you know me…I love a good home goods! They have pillows, furniture, and whatever else you def don’t need…but totally want. **Same goes for World Market. That place is a freakin’ castle of treasures.

Caramel Brulee Latte: Yes. This is a Starbucks drink…and yes, I’m aware this makes me look like a complete basic loser, but I’m in love. Go, get a holiday cup and enjoy the sugar coma for a couple hours…it’s worth it.

Lilly Pulitzer Romper: I got mine on sale, but there are plenty of options on the website for an alternative. The closest one to mine is this one. I am slowly buying outfits for my VERY late to the game “honeymoon” in February. I also snatched up this during my last trip in. **It was an essential, so I don’t want to hear it.

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Deep Gray Matte: As if I wasn’t painting you a nice basic picture of myself just yet…here’s the final nail. This color is literally everything. I’m usually a Nars fan, but I traded in my loyalty for this color…and I’m not looking back, so deal with it. Buy it, and thank me later.

That’s it for now, friends. Stay tuned for an affordable gift guide next week!

Love you, mean it.

Home Decor: Entryway Edition

How many of you are in love with those old houses with huge entryways that are perfectly designed? No one? Just me? Ok, liars.

When we bought our house, we were super excited to just move in our furniture and start decorating. Needless to say, a year later…and I’m just starting to realize what I love. As my mother says, I have champagne taste, and I don’t exactly have a paycheck that gives me what I actually want…so I have to improvise. To add to that, we live in a ranch, so you literally walk right into our living room/dining room. Here’s how I made this space more “homey.”

img_8741

The Overview

I wanted something that was practical with a touch of not so practical. (Get over it…how many pumpkins do you need? You aren’t making a pie) The little mirrors are less than helpful for checking your make-up before you go out the door, but they are cute and from Target, so they were affordable. If you want practical, Kirklands has some great pre-Black Friday sales going on right now. Each season, I plan on tweaking certain items so that it is seasonally appropriate. The more permanent items are more neutral.

The two most expensive items on the table were wedding presents, however…you can always find cheaper options. In a couple of weeks, I’ll be updating the table to be more seasonally appropriate for Christmas/winter. Can’t wait what kind of items I find! Stay tuned.

Love you, mean it.

Home Decor: Mantle Edition

Before owning a house, I couldn’t stand certain looks…gold was one of them. If anyone has been in my house as of late–I can’t get enough. I love mixing metals with different colors, and I have a big beautiful fireplace and accent brick wall that just screams, “PUT GOLD ON ME!” So, I listened, and the result makes me super happy.

The deets:

Make sure to mix up you woods and pick a metal. I’m not brave to mix metals JUST yet, but I’m open to it in the future. I picked an accent color of teal for my den, so I mixed that in with some gold accented picture frames, some dark and painted white woods, and some candles. My inspo came from Juliesheartandhome on Instagram. She runs a blog with her sister, and I wish I had her magical powers.

I divided the mantle into three parts:

img_8692-1I got the C’est la Vie and both of the picture frames from Home Goods. The vase was a wedding present from Lenox, but it’s easy to find an affordable version. The pineapple print is from etsy. It is a print from the TV Show, Psych. I chose to put a candid picture from our wedding in the white and gold frame.

img_8693

For the middle of the mantle, I chose a white and gold from Home Goods that was about $12.00. The candle and candle holder are also from Home Goods. The anchor book ends are from Target. The anchors are gone, but they have some SUPER cute ones available now.  I kept the middle of the mantle lower than the other two sides to keep it a bit interesting.

img_8694

The last part, I found these pineapples and frame at Home goods. I kept with a pineapple theme from the print on the other side of the mantle. The larger print in the back was found at TJ Maxx. The print in the smaller frame was made by me, and it the first conversation that I had with my husband in college…I made it with an app called Retype. I initially made it as a joke, and I thought it was a fun thing to put into the display.

The entire mantle cost me about $100 in total. When I started off collecting these items, I wanted to do a photo collage on a wall in my living room; however, I started realizing that my mantle needed some love. When you are designing your mantle, remember that it should have personal touches. If you love pineapples or chevrons, add 3 pieces that feature that in the space you are decorating.

Moral of the story? As my grandmother once said, “Don’t force design. Wait for your house to speak to you.” …but your house isn’t going to actually speak…you’ll just realize what you really want after a while.

My advice? STALK home decor stores and websites. Go to the clearance aisle and really look. If you see something…BUY IT. You will be driven MAD if you walk away from it, but you can always return if you decide it isn’t for you. I’m still looking for flying pig candle holders that I walked away from a couple weeks ago.

KK, love you..mean it.
